Desktop 2.0

Below is a dutch article I wrote in the end of 2007. It is in dutch because it is written as part of a writing refresh course. It talks about the (then upcoming) release of Air and Air-like technologies and what these mean for business and developers. What posibilities it offers to extend web-experiences to the desktop, as well as how much fun developers can have building these types of applications.

It is a bit low level for most flash guru’s around, but that’s because the target audience is a bit different than the better informed daily flash/flex users out there. For those that aren’t scared away yet and still wanting to read the article in english, you can translate it (seems to be quite adequate) through Google Translate.

wtf?

What is this, Flash as3 (v3) components don’t work in flash 9.0.45.0 but they do work in 9.0.115.0?? Ahw man…. That’s just plain weak…

Max Europe 2007, Barcelona was sweet!

Just got Back from Barcelona after enjoying three days of bubbling and sizzling ‘Max Europe 2007′. It was great!

First off, Barcelona wasn’t a bad idea for location at all ;) Great city with a lot to keep you busy after a long day of talks.

Took the oppurtinity to attend as many talks as I could (meaning getting up way too early…) and found most of them very usefull. A couple of them really stood out, but I’ll try to get some pics up and talk more in detail about those later on.

In the meantime, these should give you a great overview :)

Multi-touch interaction with flash

When I started working at LogicaCMG’s Frontend Centre, one of the first projects I got my hands dirty on was helping out a student who was graduating on a multi-touch prototype. Remember, this was before the iPhone/Microsoft hype happened ;). Multi-touch was new for me, and for a lot of other people too.

We got together and decided to give building the prototype in flash a try. Boy did we have fun :) It is tricky though…. operating systems (and the products -e.g. flash- running on them) asume there will be only 1 pointer. Think about it…. flash has had onRelease for ages…. but it doesn’t incorporate a way to get which mouse is down.

Silverlight vs Flash….why?

I must have been living under a rock lately, but somehow I missed the event of Silverlight taking over the world. I am completely stunned by the fact that a lot of people hear Microsoft shoot out some bold statements, and they conclude that the web is reinvented… so many wrong arguments and so hard to start discussing about them with all their inventors. Must be the downside of making it so easy to start a blog… wrong opinions can be published just as easily… ( just in case, I am janking a chain here. Don’t take that too seriously).

Video’s first usergroup meeting online

This has been communicated to the members earlier, but still I find the need to let ‘the world’ know :). The video streams we made during the first Adobe Usergroup meeting have been put online.

We want to keep adding video’s of all the meetings. For us it seemed like a great thing to be able to look back to someday.

If you have any great ideas for the Usergroup in general, don’t hesitate to let us know.

Something old…something new…

Phew… just copied all content of the old flashzone.nl (movabletype) site to the new wordpress bensmeets.com site. Big job to take on :) Was very nice to see all old content though. I have been working with RIA’s longer than I thought! In my 4th year now… time flies when…. oh you know the end of it right?

Browser in Apollo… does it run Acid2? (source)

While looking at an Apollo session at Adobe Live in Amsterdam by Mike Downey, I heard him talk about the html rendering capabilities of the html component inside the Apollo Framework. He stated that the html rendering engine is based on Webkit 2, the same rendering engine as for the new safari so it seems.

I started thinking…. new html engine…apollo…. would it succeed in the Acid 2 test?
